Cézanne to Picasso: Ambroise Vollard, Patron of the Avant-Garde is an illustrated art catalogue devoted to Ambroise Vollard, the Parisian dealer, publisher and patron whose gallery helped shape the careers of major modern artists from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book follows Vollard’s relationships with Cézanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Renoir, Degas, Bonnard, Rouault and others, while also examining his role in exhibitions, collecting, print publishing and the development of the livre d’artiste. Through essays, archival material and hundreds of reproductions, the catalogue presents modern art not only as a history of painters and masterpieces, but also as a network of dealers, collectors, markets, friendships, rivalries and risky choices that determined which artists reached the public and how their work was understood.
