The Art of the Old West / Paul A. Rossi and David C. Hunt

Rossi and Hunt draw on the Gilcrease Institute’s collection to show how artists pictured the American West. Paintings, drawings and sculpture accompany accounts of life on the Great Plains, travel up the Missouri River and the overland trails to Oregon and California. Later chapters look at cowboys and ask how much of the West pictured by artists was observation and how much was romance.
